International Women’s Day with Karla Trotman, Electro Soft, Inc.

As a woman-owned business, we are honored to share the stories and messages of incredible woman leaders across a variety of industries for our International Women’s Day blog series.

This interview is with Karla Trotman, President & CEO at Electro Soft, Inc.

Why do you think it’s important to celebrate International Women’s Day?

It is important to celebrate International Women’s Day so that we may all pause and recognize the contributions of all women of all races and their collective contributions to society. Specifically, those whose contributions tend to fade into the background, though they were at the forefront of all major movements.

What motivates you to be a leader in your industry?

Every child of color who was inspired to go into a challenging field because they met me or visited my company.

Are there any female leaders that have inspired you throughout your career?

My undergraduate logistics professor, Dr. Lisa Williams, has continued to inspire me throughout my life. She was an endowed professor for many years and was inspired to start a doll line because she wanted children of color to see themselves as beautiful. In 2022, her dolls won Toy of the Year. She is the walking embodiment of a powerful mother, woman, entrepreneur, and now, personal friend.

Representative Maxine Walters A.K.A. Auntie Maxine, can keep her cool and read someone in the most professional of ways. She inspires me to always be true to myself and to never let anyone walk right over you.

What advice or message would you share with young women who are looking to build their careers?

  • Learn how to engage and connect with others. It makes you memorable;
  • Become great at public speaking/presenting;
  • Be genuine in your connections;
  • Always follow up with people in a timely manner;
  • Leverage LinkedIn as a tool to stay connected to your network. Don’t reach out only if you need something;
  • Nothing beats a handwritten note.
