Interview with Angela McIver, Trapezium Math

For this year’s International Women’s Day, our team at Slice is proud to celebrate women across the marketing and communications industry through an interview series.

This interview is with Angela McIver, PhD, the President & Founder at Trapezium Math. Read our full interview series here.

How do you define your leadership?

I believe in running my company using democratic principles of engagement. Team members are encouraged to take risks, voice opinions and offer solutions to challenges we face. Doing so has allowed to innovate during the pandemic and shift to a completely new revenue model.

How has your leadership changed in the past year?

Pivoting our business gave me the opportunity to shift the way I manage my teams. I’ve given far more autonomy to my teams to create and evolve. This was a leap of faith that has paid off tremendously in our productivity and growth.

Can you share a story that demonstrates a key learning for you in your leadership journey?

When the pandemic hit and we were forced to close our “brick and mortar” business, we had to come together as a staff and rethink our entire model. But, many on my team were worried about continued employment and had a difficult time “thinking big” because the cost of a pivot seemed insurmountable. I really pushed the staff to dream of our new model where money was no object. I also committed to paying for them at their previous levels through the end of the calendar year. This was transformative for the staff and they began to think very creatively and were willing to take risks. This transformation got us to a great place for growth.

Who do you follow on social media that you would recommend to other women leaders?

I never miss the Podcast “How I Built This” with Guy Raz. I recommend it to everyone.

Thank you to Angela for taking part in our interview series. And be sure to read the entire series!
